Distributors: 20th Century Fox Distribution
U.S. Box Office: $4,597,760
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Ewan McGregor, Michelle Williams, Natasha Henstridge, Maggie Q
Directed by: Marcel Langenegger

Synopsis :

The movie begins with accountant Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor) working late in a boardroom, when he’s interrupted by Wyatt Bose (Hugh Jackman). They chat and smoke marijuana for a bit. Jonathan takes the subway home, and notices a beautiful blonde next to him waiting for the train. He watches her from across the train and attempts to leave at the same stop, but doesn’t make it out in time. He returns to his apartment, where he notices a pipe in his bedroom leaking and leaving a water stain (important later).

He finishes his work with the company and attempts to get in touch with Wyatt by asking a secretary to page him. Wyatt appears and invites Jonathan to play tennis with him the next day.

After their tennis game, Wyatt complements Jonathan’s tennis raquet, which Jonathan mentions is special because it uses Kevlar on the wire. (Important later) They go to Wyatt’s apartment, where Wyatt greets one of his neighbors in German. The neighbor looks at him in surprise and continues walking. Jonathan admires Wyatt’s apartment and changes into a suit that Wyatt gives him. At the club, Jonathan reveals that he has no time for relationships—he’s never at his company for longer than two weeks; and as for the companies he audits, he’s never there for more than a few days, so he doesn’t bother. He tells Wyatt that he’s not very good with women, and that he’s only ever been with four. Wyatt alerts Jonathan to a woman glancing in his direction, but Jonathan does nothing. As they head back, Wyatt has the taxi drop him off at the Waldorf-Astoria, where he meets up with a brunette and enters the hotel as Jonathan looks on in astonishment.

When they meet for lunch the next day, a cell phone goes off. Each reaches into his pocket and grabs his cell phone. Wyatt’s is ringing, so Jonathan just places his on the table. Wyatt gets off the phone, which he also places on the table, and mentions that he’ll be in London for a few weeks. They grab their phones and head off.

Later that evening, Jonathan gets a phone call. He answers it to find a woman (Natasha Henstridge) on the other end saying, “Are you free tonight?” He replies, “Yes”, but tries to explain that he’s not Wyatt. She ignores him, and repeats her question. He complies, and agrees to meet her at a hotel. When she arrives, he again tries to explain, but she doesn’t listen and invites him to her room, where she seduces him. He awakens the next morning to find her gone.

As he’s walking home, Wyatt calls him, and immediately recognizes the change in his voice, realizing what he’s done. He encourages Jonathan to continue to use his phone and enjoy. While working at another location, Jonathan gets bored, and dials one of the numbers. A woman answers, so he asks, “Are you free tonight?” When she responds that she is, he stammers and names the same hotel he’d just stayed in. She suggests another with a time, and he agrees. When he arrives at the hotel, he notices another woman (Charlotte Rampling) waiting for him. He attempts to introduce himself, but she reminds him of the rule—No Names. She asks about his room, and when he says that he hasn’t got one, she reminds him of anther rule—The Initiator gets the room. As they walk to his room, she expresses surprise that he was not informed of the rules by the person who referred him. She then explains some other rules—no business talk, no conversation, and no rough play. She also explains that most people on “the List” use it as a means of having “intimacy without intricacy”.

Over the course of the next few weeks, Jonathan continues to meet different women at different locations. He talks to Wyatt from time to time, informing him of how things are going. He also sees women that he’s been with, on the covers of magazines and in the city, never letting on that they know each other.

On one occasion, he comes across the same woman (Michelle Williams) he saw at the train station. They go to his room, where she begins to undress. Jonathan stops her and breaks the rules by starting a conversation. He mentions that he’d seen her weeks before at the train station, though she doesn’t recall it. Though he doesn’t tell her his name, he invites her to dine with him. They eat room service on the bed and get to know each other. He asks her name, so she tells him that if he can guess it, he’ll know. He tells her that he knows it starts with an “S” since he noticed the keychain on her purse, and proceeds to guess names, settling on “Sunbeam”. She decides to call him “Frank”, and they fall asleep shortly after. He awakens the next morning to a note that she left him, promising to call him later.

Throughout the day, he answers every phone call anxiously. On one occasion, it’s Wyatt, who he tells about “S” and how he broke the rules. Wyatt seems happy for him and tells him that he’ll be back in the next week. Jonathan answers the phone later that day, and it’s her, asking to meet in Chinatown. They go to a Chinese restaurant, where he gives her a wind-up duck, and she gives him a scarf. Outside, she tells him to let her leave, and he asks her to stay with him, and then pulls her into a kiss in the rain. They go to a hotel to dry off, and make out on the bed. Since they promised to wait to get to know each other, they haven’t slept together yet. He leaves for a few minutes to get some ice, and when he returns, he finds her gone, with blood splattered on the bed. He turns around and is knocked unconscious by an unseen figure.

When he comes to, he runs down to the front desk, and asks the clerk to call the police. He explains to Det. Russo (Lisa Gay Hamilton) that he doesn’t know the woman’s name, and angrily appeals for her to believe his story and search for “S”. She questions whether he’s had a breakdown, and implies that she believes this to be a hoax. She gives him her card, and tells him to call his if he remembers anything.

He goes to the office that he met Wyatt in and demands that someone put him in touch with Wyatt. Everyone claims to have no knowledge of him, and ask him to leave. Jonathan then goes to Wyatt’s apartment, and finds an older woman living in the apartment that Wyatt claimed was his. When he asks about the German neighbor, she clarifies that he’s Italian, not German and works in the carpet business, not art galleries, as Wyatt had mentioned earlier.

Jonathan returns to his apartment, where he’s surprised to find Wyatt waiting for him with a gun. Wyatt explains that he chose Jonathan because as an auditor, Jonathan has temporary access to accounts and can therefore move money around. He threatens that if Jonathan doesn’t do this, then he’ll kill “S”.

A day or so later, Jonathan checks Wyatt’s voicemail and hears one from a woman named Tina, who sounds like she’s familiar with Wyatt. Jonathan goes to meet her, and after some conflict, she reveals that she’s met him months ago in Chicago through a man named Rudulph McClaren. She also reveals that Wyatt’s real name is Jamie Getz and introduced him to “the List”.

With this info, Jonathan begins to do his research. He finds out that Rudolph was an executive at the firm that Jonathan is auditing, and that he was murdered. He also uses the info on the card that Det. Russo gave him to find out more about “Wyatt”. When Wyatt calls him, Jonathan tells him that he knows everything about him, which surprises Wyatt, but doesn’t cause him to back down.

The next day, Jonathan gets a call from Det. Russo, who tells him that she thinks she’s found the woman he reported missing. He goes to the police morgue, and finds the woman he met at the hotel the first time. She was found strangled, with a wire containing Kevlar. Det. Russo asks Jonathan if he knows this woman. He lies that he doesn’t, which she notices. He returns to his apartment to find his tennis racket missing, and photos of him with the dead woman. Wyatt sneaks up behind him in the subway, and reminds him that though Jonathan knows the truth about him, he has no idea what Wyatt is capable of, and he still has “S”.

Wyatt sends instructions of how to transfer the money, and from which accounts. He gives him a specific amount of time to have the transfer done, and periodically sends pics of a bound and gagged “S” in his (Jonathan’s) apartment. (Important later) As Jonathan continues to gather the funds, he because distracted by one of the associates of the firm he’s auditing. He becomes rude with the associate to get him to leave, and finishes the transfer with seconds to spare. As he’s doing this, Det. Russo learns that Jonathan was in the same hotel as the murdered woman, and suspects that he’s the murderer. She and her colleague leave to up Jonathan. Jonathan arrives at his apartment and waits anxiously for the elevator. He takes another look at the picture, and looks up in surprise. When he arrives at his apartment, he turns on the light and his apartment explodes. Wyatt watches from an apartment across the street. Det. Russo arrives and is surprised to realize that Jonathan is dead.

Wyatt changes his appearance slightly to resemble Jonathan, and when asked by a gentleman later, he calls himself Jonathan. He arrives at a lavish hotel in Madrid, and walks into his room to find “S” drinking on the bed. He gloats about how well their scheme worked, though “S” is noticeably bothered by it, having grown to like Jonathan. When Wyatt mentions how much Jonathan showed concern for her well being, she begins to weep, which ignites fury in Wyatt, who then kind-of forces himself on her, though she doesn’t protest.

They walk to the bank, where he plans to make a withdrawal. “S” is forced to wait in the lobby, while he, still posing as Jonathan, meets with the manager, who informs him that the account can be closed once the co-signer, Wyatt Bose, arrives. Wyatt goes to the lobby to find “S” gone. He walks out onto the street, where he receives a call from Jonathan, who approaches him. He explains that he knows “S” is involved since the pic on his phone was taken before the pipe left a stain on his wall, and that he wants half the money. Wyatt complies and together they close the account and leave the bank with their respective shares.

Jonathan promises half of his money if Wyatt would tell him how to find “S”. Wyatt then pulls a gun on him, and prepares to kill him, when he’s shot from behind. “S” appears behind him, gun in hand. She then walks away. Jonathan leaves the cases with Wyatt as he dies, and chases after “S”. He catches up with her, and explains that he simply wanted her, not the money. She kisses him, then leaves in a cab, clutching the wind-up duck he gave her and sobbing as she drive away.

Det. Russo learns that the body recovered in the fire was that of the landlord, there to fix the leaky pipe. Jonathan remains in Spain, where he comes across “S” once again. They stare at each other from across a plaza, and walk towards one another as the film ends, signifying that they do, in fact, end up together.

Black Book

Title : Black Book
Genres: Art/Foreign, Thriller and War
Release Date: April 4th, 2007 (limited)
Distributors: Sony Pictures Classics
U.S. Box Office: $4,398,392
Starring: Carice van Houten, Halina Reijn, Thom Hoffman, Peter Blok, Derek DeLint
Directed by: Paul Verhoeven

Synopsis :

In the scenes which bookend the film, a schoolteacher is shown living in 1950s Israel. By chance, she has encountered Ronnie, a wartime friend, who is now married and on a tourist package trip in Israel. The film flashes back to 1944, during World War II, and begins the story of Rachel Stein (Carice van Houten), a Jewish singer who lived in Berlin before the war and who was then living in hiding from the Nazi regime in the occupied Netherlands.

When the house that she has been hiding in is destroyed, Rachel visits a lawyer named Smaal (Dolf de Vries), who provides her with some of her father's money so that she can flee. Rachel is reunited with her family and tries to flee by boat with other Jews. The goal is to escape from the Nazi-occupied part of the Netherlands to the liberated southern part of the country. However, they are ambushed on the river by members of the German SS. Rachel survives, but does not manage to escape from occupied territory.

She becomes involved with a resistance group and assumes the alias Ellis de Vries. She seduces SD officer Ludwig Müntze (Sebastian Koch) and is offered a job at the Gestapo headquarters in The Hague. She recognizes Günther Franken (Waldemar Kobus) as the SS officer in command who had ordered the massacre of her fleeing refugee party, and manages to bug his office. She falls in love with Müntze, who in contrast to Franken is not abusive or sadistic, and becomes friends with her Dutch colleague Ronnie (Halina Reijn), who has come to terms with the occupation; Ronnie works for the Germans, has lots of sex with them, and has accepted stolen gifts from them. Her introduction in the film portrays her as being sexually loose, supposedly impervious to the Nazis’ brutality in her country, and indifferent to its citizens, except for finding life there to be dull.

Rachel's resistance cell decides to abduct the collaborator who has caused so many Jewish deaths, but the plot goes wrong and he is killed.

Müntze confronts Ellis, who persuades him to search Franken's safe, which she suspects contains the jewels stolen from fleeing Jewish people, but when a search of the safe by the commanding officer reveals nothing, the angry and embarrassed Franken reveals that Müntze has been negotiating with Dutch resistance "terrorists", and he is imprisoned, along with members of the resistance group. Rachel agrees to participate in a rescue attempt only on the condition that they free Müntze too, and reluctantly the others agree. However, the attempt fails because their plan has been discovered, and most of the prisoners and rescuers are killed.

Rachel is subsequently arrested and jailed by the Gestapo. It turns out they have known about the bug all along, and they now use it to make the resistance group believe she is the Nazi collaborator, and frame her for the catastrophic failure of the rescue operation. However, with Ronnie's help, she and Müntze escape and the two of them hide in the countryside.

When the country is liberated by the Allies, Rachel is imprisoned by the Dutch and publicly humiliated as a traitor. Because of an Allied occupation agreement that allows the German military to discipline its own soldiers, Müntze is executed on the orders of his former commanding officer, who believes him to have been a collaborator. Rachel is rescued by physician and fellow member of the resistance Hans Akkermans (Thom Hoffman), who had in fact not only been a traitor, but also responsible for the brutal death of her family at the hands of the Nazis. Akkermans, in a bid to cover his tracks, murders Franken and Smaal, and also tries to kill Rachel with an overdose of insulin, but as it begins to send her body into shock, she manages to survive by eating a bar of chocolate to counteract the drug, and escapes. (The chocolate was given to her by Akkermans in the previous scene.)

Rachel proves her innocence to resistance member Gerben Kuipers (Derek de Lint ) by means of the titular black book, in which Smaal had detailed all his dealings with the Jews he helped. Mention of his bringing many of the Jews to Akkermans for medical help just prior to their murders provides enough circumstantial evidence to implicate Akkermans as the traitor. Together Rachel and Kuipers intercept the fleeing Akkermans, who is hiding in a coffin in a hearse which he has filled with stolen money and jewels. Rachel seals the coffin's air vents, suffocating him.

After the war, instead of being imprisoned and publicly shamed as a collaborator and Nazi whore, Ronnie manages to get herself a key spot in the victory parade and falls in love with and marries a Canadian liberator. It is implied that the currency and jewels in the coffin with Akkermans were recovered by Rachel and used to fund the kibbutz where she now lives and has re-encountered Ronnie.

U.S. Box Office: $143,704,210
Starring: Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard
Directed by: Phyllida Lloyd

Synopsis :

It is 1999 on the enchanting Greek island of Skopelos (Kalokairi). The story begins at the remote Aegean island hotel, Villa Donna, run by Donna Sheridan (Meryl Streep), her daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and Sophie's fiancé Sky (Dominic Cooper).

Prior to her forthcoming marriage, Sophie nervously posts three wedding invitations ("I Have a Dream") to three different men, one of whom she believes may be her father. From three cities across the globe, three men set off to return to the island, and the woman that had enchanted each of them 20 years earlier.

Back on that island, Donna is rousing her staff for the frenetic day ahead as Sophie's bridesmaids and best friends Ali and Lisa (Ashley Lilley and Rachel McDowall) arrive and she shares with her best mates a scandalous secret: Sophie has found her mother's diary and learned she has three possible dads; American businessman Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan), Swedish adventurer Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgard), and British banker Harry Bright (Colin Firth). Without telling her mother, she has invited all three to her wedding ("Honey, Honey"), believing that after she spends time with them, she will at last know who her real father is.

Meanwhile, back on the Greek mainland, Sam, Bill and Harry; strangers until today have met at the harbour. Fortuitously, Sam and Harry have missed the ferry to Skopelos (Kalokairi), and Bill offers them a lift on his yacht to reconnect with the woman who broke all their hearts 20 years ago.

Back on Skopelos, Donna is ecstatic to reunite with old friends and former "Donna and The Dynamos" bandmates, wisecracking author Rosie (Julie Walters) and wealthy multiple divorcee Tanya (Christine Baranski), and reveals her mystification at her daughter's desire for a traditional wedding or any wedding at all. At the Villa, Sophie introduces Tanya and Rosie to true love Sky, and tells them about their idea of designing a website to attract tourists to the island. Donna explains her precarious finances ("Money, Money, Money") to her girlfriends as she takes them on a tour of the Villa. Hounded by her creditors, Donna dreams of a "rich man's world," sunbathing on a yacht and being deliciously pampered. She is brought back to reality as an ominous crack appears in the courtyard.

The three men arrive, and Sophie smuggles them to their quarters and sheepishly explains that she, not her mother, sent the invitations. She begs the men to hide so Donna will have a fantastic surprise at the wedding; seeing the old friends of whom she "so often" favorably speaks. They overhear Donna working in the storeroom below preparing to fix the crack and the men swear to Sophie they will not reveal her secret. Sophie leaves by the window just in the nick of time, as Donna peeps through the trapdoor.

She is dumbfounded to find herself face to face with the three former lovers she could never forget ("Mamma Mia!"), while the men clumsily make up excuses for their presence. Donna is adamant; they simply cannot stay. Visibly shaken, she confides in Tanya and Rosie ("Chiquitita") a secret she has kept from everyone - she is uncertain which of the three men is actually Sophie's father. No matter, as Tanya and Rosie rally her spirits by getting Donna to join in with the female staff and islanders accompanying a musical number intended to make her forget her woes. Donna and The Dynamos reclaim their glory days and champion the women of the island in a call to liberation ("Dancing Queen").

Sophie finds the men aboard Bill's yacht, and they take a trip around the gorgeous island of Skopelos("Our Last Summer") and tell her stories of Donna as a carefree girl. Upon their return, Sophie musters up the courage to speak with Sky about her ploy, but loses her nerve. Sky and Sophie sing passionately to each other ("Lay All Your Love on Me"), but are interrupted by the bachelor party that has descended upon Sky to kidnap him for his last night of freedom.

At Sophie's bachelorette party, Donna, Tanya, and Rosie perform in a surprise one-night-only event as Donna and The Dynamos ("Super Trouper"). Sophie is delighted to see her mother rock out, but becomes nervous when the festivities are interrupted by the arrival of Sam, Bill and Harry. She decides to get each of her three prospective dads alone to talk.

The surprise success story of 2005, King And The Clown shocked everyone by coming out of nowhere to become the highest grossing film of the year in Korea, and making a star of its androgynous-looking lead, Lee Jun-Ki. A modestly produced feature, with a cast featuring no A-list performers, the film is set during the reign of infamous king Yeon-San. Two performing clowns (Lee and Gam Woo Sung from Spider Forest) produce a satirical play, which criticizes the country's ruler. The two performers are arrested and accused of treason, a crime that carries the death penalty. The clowns then make a deal with the King (Jeong Jin Young - Hi, Dharma) - if they can make him laugh with their play-acting, he will spare them. They are successful, and become the official entertainers of the royal court. Things become more complicated, however, as the king shows increasing affection towards one of the clowns and they realize that their lives may have begun down an irreversible path. A thrilling drama exploring secret desire in the top echelons of power, King And The Clown is a taboo-breaking cinematic treat that tackles subject matter so rarely seen in Korean Cinema, but that this one time, has now been seen by a quarter of Korea's population! Hall), her boyfriend Steve (Adam Weisman), his mother’s boyfriend Ronnie (William Forsythe), and a school bully (Daryl Sabara). After the longest trial in the state’s history, Michael is found guilty of first degree murder and sent to Smith's Grove Sanitarium under the care of child psychologist Dr. Sam Loomis (Malcolm McDowell). Michael initially cooperates with Dr. Loomis, claiming no memory of the killings; his mother, Deborah (Sheri Moon Zombie), visits him regularly. After a year, Michael becomes fixated on his papier-mâché masks, closing himself off from everyone, even his mother. When Michael kills a nurse (Sybil Danning) during one of her visits, Deborah can no longer handle the situation and commits suicide. For the next fifteen years, Michael (Tyler Mane) continues making his masks and not speaking to anyone. Dr. Loomis, having continued to treat Michael over the years, attempts to move on with his life and closes Michael’s case. Later, while being prepared for transfer to maximum security, Michael escapes Smith’s Grove, killing the sanitarium guards and a truck driver (Ken Foree) for his clothes, and heads to Haddonfield. On Halloween, Michael arrives at his old home, now abandoned, and finds a kitchen knife and Halloween mask he stored under the floorboards the night he killed his sister.

The story shifts to Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton), and her friends Annie Brackett (Danielle Harris) and Lynda Van Der Klok (Kristina Klebe) on Halloween. Throughout the day, Laurie witnesses Michael watching her from a distance. That night, she heads to the Doyle residence to watch their son Tommy (Skyler Gisondo). Meanwhile, Lynda meets with her boyfriend Bob (Nick Mennell) at Michael's childhood home. Michael appears, murders them, and then heads to the Strode home, where he murders Laurie's parents. Having been alerted to Michael's escape, Dr. Loomis comes to Haddonfield looking for Michael. After obtaining a handgun, Loomis attempts to warn Sheriff Brackett (Brad Dourif) that Michael has returned to Haddonfield. Brackett and Dr. Loomis head to the Strode home, with Brackett explaining along the way that Laurie is actually Michael Myers' baby sister.

Meanwhile, Annie convinces Laurie to babysit Lindsey Wallace (Jenny Gregg Stewart), a girl Annie is supposed to be watching, long enough so she can have sex with her boyfriend Paul (Max Van Ville). Annie and Paul return to the Wallace home; during sex, Michael kills Paul and attacks Annie. Bringing Lindsey home, Laurie finds Annie on the floor, bloodied but alive, and calls 911. She is attacked by Michael, who chases her back to the Doyle home. Sheriff Brackett and Loomis hear the 911 call and head to the Wallace residence. Michael kidnaps Laurie, and takes her back to his home. Michael approaches Laurie and tries to show her that she is his younger sister. Unable to understand, Laurie grabs Michael's knife and stabs him before escaping the house; Michael chases her, but is repeatedly shot by Dr. Loomis. Laurie and Loomis are just about to leave when Michael grabs Laurie and heads back to the house. Loomis intervenes, but Michael attacks him by squeezing Loomis's skull with his hands. Laurie takes Loomis' gun and runs upstairs; she is chased by Michael, who, after cornering her on a balcony, charges her head-on and knocks both of them over the railing. Laurie finds herself on top of a bleeding Michael. Aiming Loomis' gun at his face, she repeatedly pulls the trigger until the gun finally goes off just as Michael's hand grips Laurie's wrist.

Boys Don't Cry

Also known as: So-nyeon-eun Wool-ji Anh-neun-da

Release Date: 2007

Genre: Drama, Human War

Starring: Lee Wan, Song Chang ee, Park Grina, Lee Ki Young

Synopsis:

War is tough, a fact well known by a generation of Koreans caught up in the slaughter of the Korean War (1950-1953).

But despite the chaos of the weeks and months that followed the end of the war, the two teenage boys in the movie “Once Upon a Time in Seoul” learn never to quit.

Instead, Jong-doo (Lee Wan) and Tae-ho (Song Chang-ui) fight for survival during those difficult times. The film is loosely based on Kenzo Kitakata’s “Scars,” a Japanese novel depicting the dark side of Japan after World War II.

Rascal Entertainment, the company that made the film, thought the descriptions of impoverished Japan in the novel were similar to those that Korea experienced in 1953.

The story of Once Upon a Time in Seoul, however, goes beyond the simple retelling of wartime disorder. “The film is an exploration of a man’s heart when life is pushed to its limits,” said the film’s director, Bae Hyung-jun, at the film’s production conference last Tuesday in Apgujeong, southern Seoul.

The movie questions life’s essential values and looks at how friendship and trust help see people through tough times.

Though Korea has transformed into a modern society, a far cry from the desolation of the 1950s, many people, especially the younger generation, face high levels of anxiety and depression.

For example, many teenagers today wander the streets searching for hope and vision, Bae said. In the case of Jong-doo and Tae-ho, brotherhood is what matters.

The two 18-year-olds meet at a postwar camp after losing their families and all their money in the Korean War. The two are not at all like each other in many ways - Jong-doo is aggressive and hot tempered, Tae-ho is rational and clever - but they team up and start to steal smuggled goods from American soldiers and plan their escape from the miserable camp.

With the money they make, they open a street stall and start selling the stolen goods. Other orphans in the neighborhood join in the business. But making the movie was problematic because the actors had to transform themselves into believable characters from that period of history.

Song had to lose 7 kilograms (15.4 pounds) and shave his head to look shabby enough for his part while Lee had to hide his muscles and look much weaker. “I was born and raised in the 1980s, so it was difficult for me to feel a connection with the postwar period,” Lee admitted. All he could do was immerse himself in the script.

The child actors who played random orphans living off the streets also faced a generation barrier. “Most child actors who came to the audition for the roles were too well fed,” Bae said. “It was difficult finding kids thin enough to look like skeletons who had survived a fierce war.”

According to the director, most child actors come from upper-middle class families and know nothing about poverty, destitution and malnutrition. “The kids in the film had to look desperate for food and nutrition, but it was the opposite,” he said.

The only solution left to express passionate hunger was to ask the child actors to cut down on the amount they ate before the shooting. Sometimes, even starving them wasn’t enough and many scenes had to be reshot over and over again.

“For those who know me, this film may come as a surprise,” Bae said. So far, the director’s short and long films have mostly been romantic comedies. Once Upon a Time in Seoul is Bae’s second feature after the comedy “Too Beautiful to Lie” in 2004.

This time he wanted to make a film about growing up, like Takeshi Kitano’s “Kids Return” (1996), a film that raises child bullying issues.

Once Upon a Time in Seoul opens next Thursday.
